Pedal to the People: Bike Art as Activism
Extra News

The Critical Mass Art Show features art that celebrates the bicycle as a way for people to connect with their community and be a better citizen. Choosing to travel by bicycle slows down the damage we are doing to our planet – especially the damage done by personal automobiles, which are wreaking havoc with emissions of carbon dioxide and other toxic substances, and are responsible for more than 40,000 deaths a year in the United States alone. With diversity, vitality and vision, the Critical Mass Art Show celebrates the bicycle as a symbol of self-sufficiency and an elegant solution to congestion, pollution and sprawl produced by the private automobile. A 2-Wheeled Alternative to Auto Show

Tribune, Jon Anderson

"We are not anti-car," noted Eric Anderson, the show curator, taking a moment off. "We just want to celebrate the joy of biking and to share that feeling with others." What Critical Mass would like to see, he added, is a policy of "appropriate use" for cars. That means "when no other means of transportation is practical," though, as one cyclist noted, "any place on Earth is within biking range, if you have the time." [full article]

Pedaling Art
New City, Michael Glab

This is a testament to the technology of the new millennium, says Laura, a public policy analyst. We can share information in new ways. We can all gather together without anyone being in charge... Laura is a biker. Not a biker chick. She pedals. To work. To the store. To her, a bike is as necessary as a Ford Fiesta to a waitress at Dennys. She and a gang of other activist bikers are celebrating their rides as well as denigrating the automobile at Autogeddon: A Critical Response to Car Culture at Lineage Gallery. [full article
