Ride Reports:

Everyone settle down and get a grip

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

I was the first person on this last ride to get arrested, well that is unless someone actually was arrested at Daley Center. Anyway, there has been two comments left by people that I suspect work for the city or are relatives of someone who does. This ride never has run stop lights in the same fashion that a funeral never runs lights. The front of the line stops at all lights and everyone else proceeds as they are part of the group. This is the way it always has been and the way it always should be. We always let emergency vehicles in, so what is the problem?

A picture

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

I've just posted a photo on my blog of my friend and I being arrested

http://gov.buttermouth.com/

Thanks to the generosity of one of our fellow riders, a picture was taken and sent to my friend regarding our arrest.

He and I were neither drunk, nor drinking; we were not resisting arrest, we were not rowdy or obnoxious. Rather in the midst of the chaos ensuing at Roosevelt and Canal, my friend and I simply sat down. The cops grabbed us almost immediately.

Arrested

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

I was arrested and spent 15 hours in solitary confinement. I am seeking out video or photos of my arrest in order to show that i was not being disorderly. I was the one that was sitting down with my eyes closed on Roosevelt and Canal. I went limp when they grabbed me and was carried to the patty wagon. If anyone has any video or photos please send them to: jlschad@gmail.com Thank you!

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

as this being my 1st ride, i have no reference to compare as other riders have been sharing.
I'd like to just let ya'll know that I was beyond sober, did not talk shit to this cop, was only trying to go around him, when he grabbed my bike by the front told me to move the other way, didn't move, grabbed his baton and put it through the spokes of my wheel, got real aggressive, to the point of grabbing me outta my bike, handcuffin', screaming in my face, handcuffing -detaining me for what?????

worst ride ever !

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

can i make the assumtion that the leader of this thing was one of the people that got arrested? who ever was leading that route i have to ask wtf? was it the cops idea to go up a staircase? crazy bottlenecks? and a crapy ride through downtown. i would have rather gone to the southside again for a 3rd time. if i was on my own bike i might have had tons more fun but i was a mime on a 6 person bike and after the hills and almost losing the mass everytime we had to go up one it became kinda a drag.

Booze part of the problem?

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

A little "get my drink on" buzz is cool, however some people on the ride were just too blatant with it and that's where our problems started. I saw a few people that had their coolers and would occassionally grab a swig while aware of their surroundings (like where the cops were). Others were just chugging and pedeling like there was no tomorrow. I believe that the cops thought that it was time, especially since it was dark, to shut us down. Again, open alcohol on the streets is illegal. That's cause right there.

CourteousMass

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

As an bicycle commuter, former bike shop employee and one time bicycle advocate, I was appalled by the actions I saw take place at last weeks Critical Mass, an unofficial monthly bike ride though downtown Chicago. My shock however was not with the police who arrested several cyclists during the ride, but rather with the way many cyclist behaved. If the message of Critical Mass is to encourage cycling as a practical form of transportation and draw attention to the problems of urban riding, cyclists must obey the laws that govern riding.

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

I have video after one of the first arrests that clearly shows one officer picking up the man's bike and throwing it on the ground in addition to all the RESOURCES that were DUMPED into a peaceful ride. The cable for my camera is on my desk at work, so I will upload it asap on Tuesday.

I don't think I need to describe the altercations with the police any further. Everyone has probably heard about (or experienced) it by now.

Chicago Police Assault Massers

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

Something was up from the moment we left Daley Plaza.

I know the police have infiltrated the Mass to an extent in the past, but this was on a whole other level: There were several cops riding with us the whole time, a bunch of undercovers wearing hawaiian shirts, and police seemed to be directing the mass from the word go.

Critical Mass arrested

Report from the August, 2007 Ride:

Great ride except for Chicago's finest who decided that we would not be allowed on various streets. Officer Nemcovic who shadowed the ride quickly made the first arrest, repeatedly hassled riders along the way, then ultimately continued his arresting rampage at Canal and Roosevelt. No one was going to be allowed to go east towards the Lakefront, those who insisted on their constitutional rights were quickly subdued and tie-wrapped before being shoved into the paddy wagon. We need to get some media attention to this incident. So much for Mayor Daley's promoting cycling!
